Themes and deadlines
The theme for the next issue will be the great escape and the deadline is the 29th February 2012. Don’t ask us what it means, or why we chose it, just get writing and send it in! This year we’ll be open to submissions from any writer, established or just starting out, as long as they’re living in the county of Dumfries and Galloway.
The Fankle doesn’t have much space so we ask you to keep it short – prose no longer than 850 words, and shorter poems (up to 25 lines) although we can squeeze in the odd epic if we have to.
We’re not looking for any particular style and genre. The themes are only intended to be a starting point – not something to be rigidly stuck to. The more off beat the better – if you can get your hands on an existing copy of the Fankle you’ll see what a range of interpretations our writers have turned out. Other than that we’re looking for good writing, an original voice, something that makes us smile, or something that gets caught in our mind’s eye and won’t let go. Either way, if you don’t send it in, we can’t print it, so there’s no point not giving it a try.
Subsequent deadlines for the next issues will be:
- 30th April 2012
- 30th June 2012
The theme is generally announced around a month before the deadline via the News and on this page.
How to Submit
Submission is easy: email your piece to sallyhinchcliffe AT gmail DOT com with the words ‘Fankle submission’ in the deadline. It must be your own work, and be available for UK serial rights: if it’s been published somewhere else you must still have the rights to have it published again.
We don’t ask for anything other than permission to publish – if you’ve had a piece in the Fankle you’re free to submit or print it elsewhere although be aware that other publishers may not take it if it’s appeared in print already.
We don’t pay – sorry, we’d love to, but we don’t make any money yet – but we will send you a copy of the Fankle and you can buy more at a discounted rate if you want to send it to all your friends and relations. And there’s the glory too, don’t forget about the glory.
We aim to get back to all submitters within two weeks of the deadline closing, and we try to acknowledge all submissions that are sent to us. If you don’t hear from us about something you’ve sent us, feel free to email again or leave a comment on the site – there’s every chance your email got caught in a spam trap, or just fell down the back of some virtual sofa somewhere
